We have found a number of tiny baby black snakes in the finished basememt - near the walls, on the carpet, on the tile.We live near lots of woods and trees. While working in the garden, we occasionally come across a small snake.l do not know how they get into the house or the garage.

What can l use to prevent them from coming into the house?Do you think they are in the walls?

How can I get rid of tiny (3 inches long) baby snakes in the basement

Just so u know black snakes r NOT poisonous. However, these might not be black snakes. In fact they might not even be babies. The common Ring Snake is no larger than a standard pencil. The distinctive feature is a thin yellow stripe behind their heads. If this is what u have they r not in the walls. They r small enough to get in on their own through small crack & openings. They r there for food & shelter. The prey on small insects like crickets, roaches, & other small bugs. The moth ball thing will work, but u can also try getting rid of insects in the area with a fog or spray. With out food they will be forced to leave on their own. I have had these little guys in the basement at my own home, so i know what u r going through.

I know Will S has already mentioned mothballs, & I wanted to let u know that they do work. It does not matter if they r scented or unscented. They produce small amounts of methane gas. Snakes can not tolerate the gas so they leave. The mothballs do not harm the snakes in any way, just chase them away. IJust open a fresh box or two & sprinkle them liberally around ur basement. Reapply reguarly as they do dissolve. 've used this method many times in my cellar & toolshed, works like a charm. Hope this helps.

Mothballs are supposed to be repellent against rodents and/or snakes. There are two kinds of mothballs, sweet-smell and nasty smell.
The nasty ones are napthalene. Sweet ones are para-dichlorobenzene.

I've been told only the nasty ones work.

Get a outside cat, but if you git rid of the snakes you might get mice because they are hanging around for a reason.

Good Luck

Ik this sounds mean but I'd kill them. I hate snakes and they scare me. If you're brave capture them and set them free outside. You should talk to a contractor about their ability to get in the walls or try the Humane Society (idk if they can help you and/or if they deal w/ snakes but they could at least tell you ways to prevent them from coming in and how to kindly get them out). This is making me cringe. snakes scare me so bad. Good luck.
